Carrying the Cross
Tempera on limewood, 147,5 x 92,6 cm
Christian Museum, Esztergom

The procession is going on the road halfway between the castle that is Jerusalem, and the Golgotha. The crosses are already standing on the hill, we can see a figure on the wheel and the two thieves being whipped up on the road to the Golgotha.

In the foreground, Christ, dressed in purple, which is familiar from the Mount of Olives scene, is falling to his knees under the weight of his burden, behind him Simon of Cyrene is holding the cross. The soldier with his back to the viewer is pulling Christ's hair while he glances at Mary and John.

Neither they nor Christ have uniform features on the series' pictures. Each scene has its own characters to express the content and meaning of that particular picture. The faces of Christ carrying the cross - the face of the soldier looking back, for example - can often be seen on other, Italian scenes, mostly from Mantegna.

The panel was probably the bottom picture on the left moving-wing of the original altar. Its back is gilded, with visible prints of a two-figure relief and signs for the places of applied carvings on it. It is truncated in its present state.
