Christ on the Mount of Olives
Tempera on limewood, 159,2 x 80 cm
Christian Museum, Esztergom

According to the Bible, the Lord's heart was filled with fear of death whilst praying and his sweat fell onto the ground as blood. He took his disciples with him and left them to wait for him and pray but they fell asleep. This is all very faithfully presented by the painter. Christ, dressed in the purple colour of sorrow, is visited by an angel with the cup of suffering in his hands. The favourite disciple, John, is wearing a robe red - the colour of love. Jacob is sleeping behind him, next to him Peter, originally holding his sword as seen on the re-appearing drawing. At his feet we can see the wild strawberry of the Visitation picture again. The armed men entering the gate behind Christ's back forecast the scene of his arrest.

The painting was probably the bottom picture on the left fixed-wing of the altar. It is truncated in its present state, only its right side is intact.
