Christ on the Mount of Olives (detail)

"O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt." (Matthew 26:39)

"O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done." (Matthew 26:42)

Christ climbs the mountain three times to face the fate his Lord had chosen for him. The twisted trees and high cliffs all mirror this tension.
