Visitation (detail): wild strawberry

The tiny wild strawberry's three-sectioned leaf symbolises the Trinity, with its five white petals referring to Christ's five bleeding wounds. Likewise, the red berries represent his drops of blood in the Garden of Getshemane.

The representation of the plant here resembles the ground on the Noli me tangere picture of the High Altar of St. Mary in Cracow by Veit Stoss, but similar schematic tufts can be found on the Ghent Altarpiece as well.
