MIHÁLTZ, Pál

Abandoned House - "War Requiem"

1982
Oil tempera on fibreboard, 60 x 80 cm
Ferenczy Museum, Szentendre

In the painting, there is a house with a brown roof and yellow walls with bare and leafless trees outside under the red sky. The colouring of the composition suggests a tragic atmosphere that the title refers to. The dramatic tone and the monumentality attached to it characteristic of Miháltz' painting of the 1980s are especially emphatic in the painting. The picture was inspired by Britten's composition titled War Requiem.

The painting is a good example of Pál Miháltz' painterly way of seeing: he remains within the borders of naturalesque representation but he does not aim at fixing the view but at reinterpreting lyrically the outside world with a certain inner sight.

This picture fits into the series of Szentendre, Margaret Island and Esztergom landscapes and townscapes of poetic colouring, which give us impression about the rich emotions and dreams of a painter of meditative character.
