MIHÁLTZ, Pál
(1899, Magyarvalkó - 1988, Budapest)

Painter, graphic artist, Munkácsy-Prize laureate (1961), Merited Artist (1965), Eminent Artist (1973). He pursued his academic studies from 1918 to 1922 under the guidance of Imre Révész, he was then a postgraduate student of János Vaszary up to 1927. In 1922 he was awarded the scholarship of the Szinyei Society. He became a regularly exhibiting artist from 1925. Between the two world wars his works were displayed at the exhibitions of the New Society of Artists, the Szinyei Society and a number of exhibitions abroad. In 1929 he made a study trip to Italy. He taught at the Technical University in Budapest from 1928 to 1946, and after that at the College of Applied Arts up to 1959. He would work in Szentendre from 1931, and he became a member of the Colony of Artists from 1946. He was a classic representative with the most characteristic tone of the so-called Szentendre school. His postimpressionist lyric style and refined, subtle colour culture was coupled with the rigorous structural discipline of constructivism. His landscapes, portraits and still-lifes that testify to an outstanding sense of composition render expression to the artist's suppressed human emotions. Several of his works are held in the Hungarian National Gallery. He published a series of linocuts entitled 'The Novel of a Life'. His watercolours are also significant works of art. His one-artist exhibitions were held in the Ernst Museum (1931, 1944, 1946, 1959, 1969), the Art Gallery (1972, 1976), the Csók István Gallery (1964, 1978), the Vigadó Gallery (1980, 1988), in Szentendre (1983), Berlin (1968) and in Sofia (1976).
