Tabán (Cityscape in Budapest)

1910
Oil on canvas, 111 x 76 cm
Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest

Galimberti's works (altogether about 20) indicate a steady artistic development. "Tabán" comes from the middle of his rather short career which sums up previous experiences and marks future trends. Like many of his contemporaries, he could never free himself from the Nagybánya traditions in portraying nature. Warm colours of this picture recall what he learnt in Nagybánya but the influence of Les Fauves is also apparent, e.g. in the decorative line of the branch leaning in, or the delicate net of contours making colours brighter. In his early works, he attempts to subordinate nature to decorative composition where he is assisted by the oblong shape of the picture. Planes of roofs and the rhythmic repetition of forms make the picture dynamic. Later, colours turned cold on the influence of analytic cubism. His pictures are free from references to literature, he is only considering connections between space, form and colours.
