DÓSA, Géza
(1846, Nagyenyed - 1871, Marosvásárhely)

At the Piano

c. 1870
Oil on canvas, 29 x 21 cm
Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest

The only artist similar to Szinyei his natural, non-conventional approach was Géza Dós. Dós also studied in Vienna and later in Munich, but his rising career was curtailed by his suicide at the age of 25. He painted his modern study, "Playing the Piano", around 1870. The picture is characterized by gentle and vivacious colours, transparently thin layers of paint and light, and wide brush-strokes. Dósa's way of grasping the moment goes beyond the conventional works depicting everyday scenes. This, together with his ability to create an intimate atmosphere, made him an artist comparable to Szinyei.
