Church at Zseliz

Besides pictures of traditional subject matter, there is a fresco of peculiar iconography in the sanctuary: it shows the death of György Becsei Vesszős, the patron of the Church, in 1388. An angel and a devil are fighting for the soul of the dead, Mary is praying to Christ, Christ to the Holy Father to let him go to heaven, and Margit, his daughter is handing over a prayer on a band pleading for her father. The personal touch and the dialogue written on the band are particular features of the picture. The role of writing leads one to conclude that the picture and the viewer have entered a new type of relationship.
