Mary and St. John the Evangelist are standing on the right of the cross.

Mary, who is wearing the blue colour of the "Queen of Heavens", is collapsing to the ground in her pain. John, recognisable in his red cloak, is supporting her as son, following Christ's order. The motif has been found to be taken from The Man of Sorrows by Schongauer.
