The man dressed in rich turkish clothes on the left was recently identified as Pilat. No wonder that his angry gesture pointing at Christ reminds one of the Ecce Homo representations. Next to him stands a soldier with the flag of the Synagoga, his pose is that of the allegorical women often representing the Synagoga. The flag - which also appears on The Mount of Olives - is too of symbolic importance, as is the pose of the soldier. The ram had been the symbol of the Synagoga, it refers to the sacrifice of the Old Testament. The moon symbolises the Old Testament itself because it has no light on its own, it only reflects the light of the sun - the New Testament. Thus it is often present on representations of the Crusifixion. Together they symbolise the old Jewish faith.
