In Mészöly's pictures, intimate atmosphere was accompanied by plein air, either more objective and naturalistic, or poetically abstract in function of motif, lighting and mood.
His approach to nature was assisted by his sense of rhythm and ability to abstract. His pictures are well founded: structure of the ground is presented with simple tools, and so are structural elements of trees with the anatomy of tree trunks and branches. Figures of peasants, fishermen and women make his compositions more life-like with their movements and masses, thus his pictures often appear to be snapshots in spite of their relatively static quality. The group of women who have come to the spring to get water are in harmony with nature, their presence radiates the poetry of everyday life in villages.
