The Solitary Cedar

1907
Oil on canvas, 194 x 248 cm
Janus Pannonius Museum, Pécs

The picture of unique beauty, full of timeless and universal symbols, is an unparalleled masterwork of universal art history. Recent research has proved that the picture contains symbols referring to the origin and beliefs of Hungarians, relationships to Oriental cultures, the tree of life symbolising the universe and the self-portrait of the painter, and some more messages. Its symbols are not self-constrained but they pass on a message to the painter's age. "Providence did not rest, it got me to paint the 5-6.000 year old cedar in Lebanon, with branch drawing a sword and threatening the world," he wrote. Cataclysms symbolising the end of human civilisation appearing in the works of philosophers and artists in the 19th century can be traced in notes of Csontváry, too, this is why it became his obsession to criticise his age for being vicious and uncivilised. He thought, only geniuses like him had the ability to save the world, this is why he suffered much of his not being understood by his contemporaries. The vitality symbolising the wounded artist represents the power and eternity of art. He thought to achieve the magic of imaging with his dynamism of colours, intensity of light and rich tones never experienced before. He established a perfect system of colours, forms and lines to express depths of messages which makes the spectator understand the creative force of the highest order.
