Báthory Madonna (1526)

Báthory Madonna, the most beautiful statue of Hungarian Renaissance sculpture, follows a type of Madonna created by artists in Florence. Beauty is accompanied by good spirits which is enhanced by the determined straight line of the frame and the background. In fact, the crown is intended to serve the same purpose. Wings and drapes of small angels represent the most dynamic part the relief. Deep carvings unusual in stone cutting create strong light and shadow effects. The technique taken over from Gothic wood carving reveals the origin of the motif. According to the words of András Báthory who commissioned the artist to create the statue, he called it a "masterwork". The table was originally over the portal of a church or a chapel as some words of the inscription welcome visitors with "peace to him who enters".
