Flight to Egypt

1920s
Tempera, Indian ink on paper, 28 x 22 cm
Deák Collection, Municipal Gallery, Székesfehérvár

A work by Noémi Ferenczy (1890, Szentendre - 1957, Budapest), the cartoon for the tapestry.

Noémi Ferenczy produced "Escape to Egypt", one of the most significant works of her early period, a tapestry with motifs of art nouveau, in 1916. She returned to this Biblical subject matter in the 1920s to design it in a newer version, which she did not realize. This decorative picture adds fresh colour to her art engaged mostly in portraying work. Mary with her baby, and the mule recall figures of the tapestry, but other details of the forest are different. Figures of the 1916 picture are almost lost in the luxuriant vegetation and the composition is enclosed in a border with motifs of fruits and plants naturally depicted. The cardboard variation of a later time appears to be an extract of bigger tapestry with figures, there are only some trees and clumps of grass indicating plants, and the frame is decorated by geometric forms.
