TAPESTRY MAKERS
(first half 20th century)

Puppet Theatre

c. 1907
Tapestry, 150 x 100 cm
Private collection

The tapestry was executed after the design of Aladár Körösfői-Kriesch (1863-1920).

The exhaustive gathering of folk material influenced the activities of the Gödöllő weaving workshop, which produced two types of carpet. One employed geometrical forms drawn from folk-art, the other was the so-called "story rug". The Puppet Theatre, which commemorates a performance of the popular folk tale "László Vitéz", is an interesting example of the latter type.
