Pietà

1700-50
Limewood, repainted, height: 145 cm
Holy Virgin Church, Zirc

This large-scale "Pietà", an unique piece in the sculpture of Hungarian Transdanubia, stands on an altar in the so-called Little Church of Zirc. Its special frontal view, as well as the body of the dead Christ with opened arms and his head drooped on his shoulder, call to memory the medieval "Gnadenstuhl" pictoral style. This type of Pietà spred from the beginning of the 16th century from Italy, via engravings and reliefs. A Lemberg "Pietà" (Lvov, Boim Chapel, 1609) by Johann Pfister of Breslau (Wroclaw) was directly based on Italian models, and played a catalytic role in the spread of this type in Silesia and Bohemia. It cannot be ruled out that Zirc's Cistercian Monastery had the monumental wood sculpture brought, or invited its master, from Heinrichau (Henryków).
