UNKNOWN MASTER, altarpiece painter
(18th century)

Altarpiece of Patrona Hungariae

1739
Oil on canvas
Saint Michael Church, Sopron

This altarpiece was executed by Bartolommeo Altomonte (1693-1783). His father, Martino Altomonte was a principal master of Austrian Baroque painting who was born in Naples the son of a baker of Tyrolese origin. His compositional approaches, related to Neapolitan masters Francesco Solimena and Luca Giordano, and his plastic shaping in the manner of the Roman masters, had a definite influence on the next generation of Austrian painters, among them his son, Bartolommeo Altomonte.
