Epitaph of Imre Czobor

c. 1520
Tempera on wood, 214,5 x 133 cm
Slovak National Gallery, Bratislava

This large votive panel - the Epitaph of Imre I. Czobor with the Crowned Assumpta - originates from Szakolca. It was painted after parts of graphic sheets of Albrecht Dürer. Style-wise, it is related to the Silesian school of painting of that time. The high quality of painting distinguishes this work from common, often used reproductions. The face of Imre I. Czobor shows no more just a type of personality, being rather a portrait with individual features signalling the advent of Renaissance.
