UNKNOWN MASTER, altarpiece painter
(16th century)

High Altar of St George

1516
Wood
Roman Catholic Church, Szepesszombat

The altarpiece was executed probably by the workshop of Master Paul of Lőcse and it belongs to their best works. It manifests the influence of Veit Stoss' style and some Renaissance elements.

The chest of the altarpiece (177 x 178 cm) contains the high-relief representing the Battle of St George with the Dragon. The four panels of the open wings depicts saints, while the eight panels of the closed wings illustrate the story of St George. The size of the panels is 116 x 79 cm each. On the predella (80 x 170 cm) the relief of the Last Supper is shown.
