UNKNOWN MASTER, altarpiece painter
(15th century)

Crowning by Thorns

c. 1490
Tempera on wood, 88 x 91 cm
Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest

The panel, painted on both sides, was part of the moving wing of a winged altarpiece. On one side a scene from the legend of Saint Martin (inner side of the altarpiece), on the other side a scene from the Passion, the Crowning by Thorns (outer side) can be seen.

The Crowning by Thorns is a detailed composition with many figures like the painting on the other side of the panel.
