Seated Nude Viewed from Behind

1910
India ink, pen, 29,8 x 41,5 cm
Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest

After his early Naturalist and Art Nouveau period, János Vaszary fell under the spell of modern French art. The composition of this Seated Female Nude Viewed from Behind is built on pure line; it is the Hungarian counterpart of Matisse's drawings, which were based on a single circular contour. This drawing, produced in 1910, is a fine example of those Hungarian paintings and drawings which were created under French influence around that time. Vaszary's academic studies gave him a firm basis for his decorative, synthetic nude drawings. Like the entire oeuvre of the artist, these drawings are full of the joy for life and, at the same time, they suggest a kind of urban frivolity.
