VASZARY, János

To Spring

1900
Chalk on paper, 64,2 x 45,5 cm
Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest

This drawing is one of the loveliest examples of the nude in Hungarian Art Nouveau. Standing with her back to the onlooker, with the wreath of flowers in her hair, she is clearly an erotic symbol of spring and awakening. The compositional scheme had been popular since Ingres' Spring. Vaszary's painting, however, clearly reflects the mentality of Art Nouveau.
