János Vaszary was an attractive figure of Hungarian painting in the first half of this century. He was an excellent colourist and his imaginative art, sensitive to modern trends, ensures him an important place in the history of Hungarian art. He developed his decorative style in Paris stimulated by Dufy, Matisse and Van Dongen. His own dynamic character is manifested in his love of contrasts and his passionate rendering. "It is enough to be inspired by nature or to resemble it with suggestive force", he admitted, and this is typical of his temperamental art. As a professor of the Academy of Fine Arts, he had a great influence on thhe younger generation and the Hungarian avant-garde movement. The picture reproduced here was bought by the Hungarian National Gallery from the collection belonging to the painter István Révész.
