VASZARY, János
(1867, Kaposvár - 1939, Budapest)

Golden Age

1897-98
Oil on canvas, 92,5 x 132 cm
Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest

From his formative years until his death Vaszary's style underwent numerous changes, from Art Nouveau to Post-Impressionism. Vaszary's adoption of an Art Nouveau style was short-lived, yet one of his highest achievements, Golden Age, was painted in this vein. The painting shows a nostalgic yearning for a lost paradise. Thje frame was made by the artist and its tendrol-like ornamentation acts as an extension of the elegiac, semivisionary landscape.
