VASTAGH, György the Elder
(1834, Szeged - 1922, Budapest)

 Painter. The father of the painter, Géza Vastagh and the sculptor, György Vastagh. Following his studies in Vienna and Budapest he lived in Kolozsvár (Cluj Napoca, Romania) and then in Vienna and Budapest. He painted mainly portraits (The Archduke Josef, The Archduchess Clotild etc.), but he also made altar paintings (Alcsút) and anecdotic paintings of folk events in a naturalistic approach (Spinning Gipsy Woman, Mushroom-picking Girl). In addition, he painted a fresco for the Opera House (Bacchus cycle).
