THORMA, János

The First of October

1903
Oil on canvas, 154,5 x 215 cm
Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest

Recruits joining the army are saying good-bye in Thorma's carefully composed picture: he returned to a more objective and precise portrayal of events. As compared with the colours of "Sufferers", his pallette became more colourful and lively. The scene which is taking place at the Nagybánya railway station, shows a sensitivity which was developed at the Nagybánya school: artists wanted to arrest phenomena of light as they saw them. He is superb at typifying in order to depict simple figures of village people and to express his sympathy for them. In spite of his somewhat elegiac portrayal, he is under the influence of Munkácsy's tradition of critical realism. His subject matter is more subdued than that of "Martyrs of Arad". The first exhibition of the picture brought him a lot of success all over the world.
