Maternity

1906
Struck bronze, 60 mm
Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest

Ede Telcs was a contemporary of Fülöp Ö. Beck, and both belonged to the generation of Hungarian artists who first became aware of the possibilities of this form of artistic expression. Beck, Telcs, Berán, Csillag and Reményi were the pioneers of Hungary's especially fine and artistic medal art, and raised it to a standard that has brought world-wide appreciation. Portraits have a significant in Telcs's oeuvre. He was also an active educationalist and even today he is regarded by many medallists as their spiritual master.

"Maternity" shows a mastery of technique and design, and is full of lyrical tenderness. The figure of the young woman leans forward wearily, while she cradles her baby in her lap. The surface of the bronze gleams, and the beautifully modelled nude figure reminds one of Telcs's monumental sculptures.
