SCHAFFER, Adalbert

Adalbert (Béla) Schaffer, painter. He studied in Pest and mainly in Vienna. He exhibited portraits and head studies in Vienna in 1842. From 1844 onward he exhibited still-lifes, flower pictures in Pest also, and after a short stay in Temesvár (Timisoara, Romania) he settled in Pest at around 1845. He painted his still-life entitled 'The Statue of Fanni Elsler' at this time. This painting is now on display in the Museum of Fine Arts. One of his still-lifes painted in 1849 found its way to the Belvedere Collection in Vienna. He exhibited his works in Munich in 1858, and he is said to have visited Saint Petersburg in the 60s. He tried his skills at photography also in Pest in the fifties. He settled in Düsseldorf a few years before he died.
