PÓLYA Tibor
(1886, Szolnok - 1937, Szolnok)

Painter and graphic artist. He was educated in Budapest, Szolnok and Paris. From 1912 to 1919 he was a member of the Kecskemét colony of artists. His works characteristically suggest fresh impressionism; he had a predilection for vividly populated compositions, which he painted in the spirit of the old Dutch painters but with a definitely Hungarian zest. Apart from landscapes and figural compositions, he prepared caricatures, book covers and poster designs, as well. Between 1917 and 1924 he organised collective exhibitions in the Ernst Museum nearly each year. In 1925 and 1928 he visited America and published an album about the journey of the delegation which travelled to America to mark the event of the unveiling of the Kossuth Statue. In 1929 he organised a collective exhibition in the Fészek Club. In the 1930s he lived on the Szolnok colony of artists and was a leader thereof. He illustrated the works of outstanding Hungarian writers (Gyula Krúdy, Frigyes Karinthy etc.). His works are kept in the Hungarian National Gallery.
