PÓLYA, Iván
(1889, Szolnok - 1939, Budapest)



Painter and sculptor. He studied sculpture in Budapest and, later, painting in Paris. After his return to Hungary he worked in Szolnok for a year. After the First World War he settled down in Budapest. He had exhibitions in the Budapest Museum of Modern Arts from 1907. He organised collective exhibitions in the Ernst Museum in 1924, 1931 and 1938, and in the National Salon in 1929. He also painted frescoes. Jointly with Eszter Mattioni he was the inventor of a decorative genre conventionally referred to as 'painted stone'. His works are on display in the Budapest Historical Museum and the Hungarian National Gallery.
