PAIZS GOEBEL, Jenő
(1899, Budapest - 1944, Budapest)

Painter. He learnt to do glass-painting at the School of Industrial Drawing in 1916-1917. Paizs Gobel, who was a pupil of Tivadar Zemlényi and István Réti at the Budapest Art School from 1916 to 1924, visited Paris and Barbizon in 1924-25. He worked in Nagybánya for six months. He was a co-founder of the Artists' Society in Szentendre. His art first reflected the influence of the Barbizon School, then that of István Szőnyi. "Leaning on the Table", a self-portrait (1926), was a major work of this period with plastic forms and expressiveness. His individual style, a strange dream world, developed in the 1930s ("Golden Age", 1931, "Still Life with Crab", "Dream in Csopak"). His permanent topic was the Szentendre landscape which he painted with great intimacy ("The Small Bridge in Szentendre", 1934). His late period until his death was characterized by delicate, sensitive colours and soft forms ("Circus", "Self Portrait with Eyes Wide Open", 1943).
