PAÁL, László
(1846, Zám - 1879, Charenton)

Paris Road in Fontainebleau Forest (sketch)

1877
Charcoal on paper, 418 x 555 mm
Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest

It is quite understandable that the great "plein-air" painters preferred to work with brushes and paint. Their objective, to represent landscapes with the freshness of the first impression, portraying the momentary atmospheric effects, almost excludes the use of preliminary sketches. Studies were only done for figure composition. Paál was first and foremost a landscape painter and so he did very few drawings. Their intimacy relates them to the similar works of Mészöly. His most beautiful drawing is the one reproduced here, the sketch for his famous painting. The soft shapes of the foliage and the depth of perspective show all the qualities of Paál's very best paintings.
