NEMES LAMPÉRTH, József
(1891, Budapest - 1924, Sátoraljaújhely)

Back of a Nude

1914
Ink drwing on paper, 540 x 370 mm
Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest

The drawings Lampérth did in Paris are characterized by robust dynamism, plasticity, excited lines, distinct colours and striking white patches of light. He adopted the Cubist geometric articulation of the body structure, but the forms, radiating dramatic tension and emotional intensity, suggest more the influence of Expressionism. By 1912 his style had matured, and his vivid monumental water colours, close in effect to oil paintings, ensure him a special place in Hungarian art.

Lampérth belonged to the Activist group, and Kassák's periodical "MA" (Today) published many of his drawings. In 1919 he participated in the work of the Proletarian Art Studio. In the short period of his artistic activiti - barely a decade and a half - he executed an enormous number of landscapes and nude drawings in the same forceful style.
