Still-life with a Lamp

1916
Oil on canvas, 65,5 x 90 cm
Janus Pannonius Museum, Pécs

Nemes Lampérth's pictures have three major subject matters: figures, still-lives and landscapes. In "Still-Life with Lamp", he painted his favourite motifs in a view from above. On the lef, there are two pots of cactus with fleshy leaves leaning into space. Behind the smaller pot, there are a slim vase and a red flower with a short stalk in it. In the background, there are a plain china bowl, an oil lamp with opaque glass to the right and a pot of cactus. The surface of the table is greenish-purple, nine tenths of the background are dark brown, the left of the picture is greenish, which is divided into patches painted in strips. Objects are painted with definite brush-strokes, they consist of plainlike patches which are modelled in a plastic way by light and colour reflexes. Oily, warm browns go over into shades of red, purple and turquoise.
