In this drawing, Nagy deals with a popular contemporary theme based on a play by Maeterlinck. His fairy-tale world was in keeping with the mood of Art Nouveau, and with its exaggerated lines and dynamic linear rythms, Palleas and Melisande succeded in becoming the graphic equivalent of Maeterlinck's literary mysticism.
