NAGY, Sándor
(1869, Németbánya - 1950, Gödöllő)

Our Garden

1902
Oil and tempera on wood, 37,5 x 50 cm
Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest

The picture shows Sándor Nagy and his wife in the garden of the house in Veszprém with the Bakony-mountains in the background in the year when they got married. This is the first picture since they got married, the first picture to show what the artist imagined the idyll of everyday life to be like. Tale-like motifs appear in the garden, a scene of naturalism. The owl symbolizes man's wisdom, the deer represent woman's kindness and lilies refer to chastity during life together. Belonging together is also expressed by the gentle S-curve of the figures. In his "Double Portrait", Nagy sums up thoughts on this subject matter in a purer way.
