MÉSZÖLY, Géza
(1844, Sárbogárd - 1887, Jobbágyi)

Riverscape

c. 1875
Oil on wood, 38 x 67,5 cm
Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest

Géza Mészöly managed to get close to nature with the same kind of intimate feeling: he watched Lake Balaton and River Tisza with great interest. His delicate brushwork, colours and subject matters convince one best if one devotes oneself to the atmosphere of the picture.

Mészöly thought that clods, ponds, short-lived grass leaves and the sky are of such poetic beauty that a life time would not be enough for an artist to paint its variety. These quiet landscapes guarantee the immortality of his oevre.
