Medgyessy's real world was monumental sculpture and he rarely ventured into the realm of medals, though when he did, it was with pleasing results. His "Self-Portrait" dated 1921, is the artist's objective impression of himself.
Medgyessy instinctively felt the relationship of medals with drawing, that it to say, with completely two-dimensional representation. He loved drawing and all through his life he drew. In his work he relies mainly on deep contours, and in so doing emphasizes the drawing and lines, while the surface is rather flat. The long head is set diagonally across the medal, filling the entire surface. It is a characteristic head, with a narrow bearded face, and is reminiscent of the head of his famous "Turán Horseman".
