On the Banks of Zazar

1900
Oil on canvas, 40 x 60 cm
Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest

The teacher of Jenő Maticska was the first to discover the painterly qualities of the deserted plain that lies on the Banks of the Zazar. He chose the plain lying between Felsőbánya, Nagybánya and Misztótfalu as a background of his József is sold by his brothers because of its biblical atmosphere. Several pictures of Maticska that are now in different collections were inspired by this landscape.

On the pictured entitled On the Banks of Zazar we can see the capricious curve of the river as seen from the inundation area. The rocky ground, the flooded bank of the river is shown in the colours of late afternoon. The ochre colour of the clay, the burning sienna, the reddish orange has a vibrating effect on the canvas. The left side, the ascending shore is dominated by the green of the plants. The grayish-blue mountains and the high sky with white clouds have a monumental effect.

The painting is interesting because of the originality of the well-chosen motif. The refined sensibility, with which the artist realizes an unbreakable harmony between the contradicting tones of cold and warm colours, is worth mentioning as well.
