MATICSKA, Jenő
(1885, Nagybánya - 1906, Nagybánya)

Landscape

1900
Oil on canvas, 93 x 125 cm
Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest

His contemporaries praised only Jenő Maticska's naturally born sense of colour more than his intuitive gift. It is true that a great number of his pictures are characterized by a unified composition of colours. He is able to arrange totally contradictory nuances into a perfect harmony. The contrast between the earth colours of the eroded hillside and the strong green tones realizes an interesting experience of colour on the Landscape.

Besides coordinating the colours, he pays attention to the harmony of the compositional elements as well. On the diagonally constructed composition we can see a reddish-yellow-brownish eroded hillside on the right side of the road. The withered pine tree dominates the left side. A road meanders between the green colours of its environment under the hillside destroyed by erosion. The skyline that closes the composition is made up of the zigzag of the peaks of the pine trees.

The landslide, the bare road, the withered tree is a rather sombre theme. In spite of this, the painting is radiating with positive energy.
