The paintings of Jenő Maticska are generally dominated by warm colours: the ochre of the clay, the reddish orange, and the lively green. Most of these pictures are balanced and bright. Their inner serenity, stable and genuine honesty, artlessness reflect well-balanced and genuine nature of the young painter.
The Frost is hardly fitting into this scheme. A bright blue tone is holding the composition together; the snow on the mountains accentuates the coldness of which. The river is breaking forth from the mountains in a spring inundation. This devastating flood is rendered with restless, whirling, violent brushstrokes. The mountains of the background seem to be stable, but everything is washed away by the flood in the foreground. The naked branches of the tree seem to be begging for help on the shore.
