KRIZSÁN, János
(1886, Kapnikbánya - 1948, Nagybánya)

View of Nagybánya

1931
Oil on canvas, 82 x 71,5 cm
Private collection

In spite of his belonging to the second generation the art of Krizsán János was not characterized with an opposition with the founding members of the colony (as in the case of the neoists), but with a total identification with their spirituality. The love of nature was decisive for him and he tried to reproduce its beauty with traditional naturalistic/impressionistic methods of creation.

The View of Nagybánya is not one of the modern works of art of his contemporaries, but its authenticity and almost poetic beauty make it really appealing. It must be due to the technical knowledge of the artist and his complete identification with nature, that the composition is so stable and balanced.

The composition chosen by the artist is quite peculiar. The beautiful valley with its hiding houses and the hills in the background can be seen through the branches of a huge shriveled tree. The houses hidden in the valley seem to be seeking protection. The huge tree, which is dominating the view and the dark clouds of the sky, are a bit threatening indeed.
