Landscape (Autumn in the Park)

1914
Oil on canvas, 86,5 x 105 cm
Museum of Maramureº District, Baia Mare

János Krizsán was born in a miner family, but he was more fascinated by the unlimited liberty of the existence of an artist. This is why he decided to quit his well-paid job and join the artist colony that settled in his native town.

His art has a meditative character. He had great difficulties in finding the ways of expression that suited him the most. His talent was improving very slowly. He was an adept of the traditions. He could never identify himself with the principles of the rebels of the colony. In spite of this, some paintings of his oeuvre, like the Autumn in the park, show that he sometimes instinctively understood the essence of the modern concepts.

The concept of Autumn in the park is summarizing and decorative instead of a naturalistic one. Huge, homogeneous green colour patterns can be seen in the foreground, but the colour of the field, of the pine trees and that of the sky is not divided into nuances either. The strong and warm colours of the autumn are paired with a green grass and blue sky reminding the summer. The composition is static, symmetrical. The picture radiates stability and equilibrium. One must have a feeling of infinity watching it.
