The Madonna is a favourite theme in Margit Kovács's art. She had made two typical Madonna pieces prior to the Breast-feeder Madonna. She had made a naively cute 'Pot cake Madonna' of conic shape assimilating the effects of the folk-baroque in 1938, and an expressively modelled 'Swaddling Madonna' around 1942. While the two previous Madonna statuettes are standing figures, the cloaked figure of the larger-sized Breast-feeder is in a sitting posture facing the viewer. The artist tilted the heads slightly to dissolve the static impression of the symmetrical composition erected along a vertical axis. The most intimate relationship possible between mother and child is rendered here by Margit Kovács in the form of a Madonna representation that relies on decorative effects. Mary's figure is framed extremely decoratively by her wavy blue-trimmed cloak that is ornamented with stylised flowers and spiral motifs.
