The Three Magi

1906-07
Oil on canvas, 116 x 127 cm
Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest

Koszta had to paint a picture on a biblical subject-matter when he was in Rome on a Fraknói-scholarship. He painted the first version of "The Three Magi" on the wall of the Fraknói-villa in Rome, which was more grandiose and monumental than his previous pictures: masses of figures are heavier and more fiery. His critics appreciated it and referred to it as a "Peasant Madonna". There is no halo around Mary's head, which appeared in another version. Informal simplicity and artlessness radiate from the picture. His composition originated from "Mátyás and Beatrix are Meeting" (1898) which he revised in Rome.
