KONTULY, Béla
(1904, Miskolc - 1983, Budapest)



Painter and art teacher. He studied art in Prague and at the Art School in Budapest under István Réti. In 1928-30, he studied on a fellowship at the Hungarian Academy in Rome together with his wife. During the 1930s, he received orders to paint frescoes for the stair-case of the University in Szeged in 1931, for the chapel in Hermina út in Budapest in 1934 and for the Szent Anna Church in 1934 together with Pál Molnár C. He did decorations for the Vác Cathedral, the Dominican Church in Thököly út in Budapest (1944) and the frescoes entitled "Proclamation of the Golden Bull" for the Assembly Hall of the Székesfehérvár Town Hall (1944).

He was a teacher at the Art School in 1939-47. After 1945, he restored and painted frescoes for churches (Sümeg, Jászberény, Salgótarján and Miskolc). His portraits are also significant. His landscapes, still-lives and pictures on historic and ecclesiastical subject matters are chraracterized by the influence of the novocento, and his interest for nature and decoration.
