KOHÁN, György
(1910, Gyulavári - 1966, Gyula)

Painter, Kossuth-Prize laureate (1966) and Munkácsy-Prize laureate (1960, 1964). He was a student of Oszkár Glatz at the Academy of Fine Arts. He made study-trips to Paris in 1931 and to Italy in 1935. His works were exhibited in the Tamás Gallery in 1930 and 1939, and he had comprehensive exhibitions at the Art Lovers' in 1943, in Hódmezővásárhely in 1946, at the Free Union of Artists in 1948, in the Budapest Art Gallery and in Hódmezővásárhely in 1959 as well as in the Hungarian National Gallery in 1965. He was awarded a Tornyai plaque at the 7th Autumn Exhibition of Vásárhely. He developed lowland painting further in his unique style. In his art characterised by a dramatic force the impact of folk art is united with symbolic perception (Women, Ages, 1949; Anxiety, 1964; Pot-mender, 1964). The mentality of his style is akin to that of Aba Novák and Mexican painting (The Memory of War, 1941-42; Offering of Fruits, 1964; Woman with Peacock, 1965). His heritage is now kept in the Gyula Town Museum.
