KMETTY, János
(1889, Miskolc - 1975, Budapest)

Self-portrait

1912
Chalk on paper, 852 x 604 mm
Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest

Right from the beginining Kmetty's art was linked with the early phase of Cubism. This work shows both the Cubist approach, concentrating on the basic structure of body and space, and the master's sound knowledge of anatomy.

Kmetty's interest and responsiveness to theory and dynamic composition - a quality of Béla Uitz's work as well - was strongest during his studies in Paris and immediately after his return. This large, early "Self-Portrait" was presented by the artist. The determined expression and deep emotional content later faded out of his works and they became cooler and more rational.
