Pushing a Cart

1930
Oil on wood, 49,5 x 59,5 cm
Private collection

In the decade between 1920 and 1930 some ideological and formal changes can be observed in the oeuvre of the artist. This period, in which rather course forms characterize the Pushing a Cart was made. His most common theme is the work, the fate of the worker and he is looking for the most simple devices to express his observations considering these.

Pushing a Cart has a graphical character. It is defined by strong contours, few colours, the choice of dark nuances. These characteristics show the influence of Derkovits. The engravings, pictures of the latter influenced not only Klein's choice of themes, but their artistic interpretation as well.

We see a robust man on the picture, which is pushing the cart obstinately, decidedly. The whole view is dominated by the monumentally expended manly figure with its expressive position, its back bent with endeavour. Due to the huge, decorative fields of colour, the painting becomes full of rough energy and tension. The interpretation of the theme is an expressionistic one. The choice of expressionistic devices must have been conscious in this case, because these are fit for the showing of social differences and often have surprising, thought-provoking effect.
